October is Fire Safety month

Did you know that October is Fire Safety month? This means it is the perfect time to check your smoke detectors and fire extinguishers. It is recommended that the batteries in your smoke detectors be replaced every year. To help offset the costs of the batteries, one of our companies that we write homeowners insurance through, American Strategic Insurance Co, annually mails 9-volt batteries to its policyholders, along with a safety reminder to replace the old batteries in their home’s smoke detectors. That’s over 1 million batteries to their policy holders. Although our carriers can and will rebuild or replace your home after a fire, it’s your family that cannot be replaced.

The risk of dying in a home fire is cut in half in homes with working smoke alarms. When a smoke alarm sounds, on average you only have 2 minutes to get out. So, make sure that you check your batteries monthly. Have a smoke detector on every floor of your home and outside your bedrooms.

This week either create (or practice if you already have created) your fire escape. Review w/ your family two ways to exit from each room. Now is a good time to check to make sure that your house number is visible and easy to read for the fire department. The National Fire Protection Association website has great information for you and your family. Please take some time to check out their link and download some of their useful information that enables you to talk about fire safety; it just might save you and your family’s life. http://www.nfpa.org/public-education/campaigns/fire-prevention-week
